Surgery With General Anesthesia/IV Sedation

**IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ**

PLEASE CALL OUR OFFICE AT LEAST 1 WEEK IN ADVANCE IF YOU NEED TO RESCHEDULE YOUR SURGERY TO AVOID A LATE CANCELLATION FEE!!            

 

Prior to surgery WITH General Anesthesia/IV Sedation:

  1. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING (including water) 8 hours before your appointment.  This includes GUM and HARD CANDY.* Failure to follow this item will require rescheduling your surgery and incur a $200 late cancellation fee.
  2. You may take your regular medications at the normal time, unless you have been told to do otherwise. Use no more than a small sip of WATER to take the medication.
  3. A responsible adult over the age of 18 must accompany you to the office. This person must remain in the office during the entire procedure and must be able to drive you home and remain with you at least 8 hours after you arrive home. If under 18, a parent or legal guardian must accompany you or the procedure will be cancelled.
  4. Wear comfortable clothing; Loose fitting shirt with short sleeves to accommodate the IV and Blood pressure cuff as well as baggy pants to allow for proper circulation to the legs.
  5. Wear low heeled, well-fitting shoes, such as tennis shoes. Do not wear flip flops/sandals, clogs, or heeled shoes.
  6. DO NOT WEAR CONTACT LENSES, JEWELRY, or DENTURES/DENTAL PROSTHESES. POCKETS MUST BE EMPTY, this includes keys, wallets, phones, etc.
  7. DO NOT WEAR EYE MAKEUP or HEAVY FACE MAKEUP. Do not wear NAIL POLISH or FALSE NAILS.
  8. You may brush your teeth before your appointment.
  9. Avoid alcohol consumption at least 3 days prior to your surgery. Alcohol can lead to excessive bleeding and may interfere with sedation medications, which may be life threatening.
  10. Avoid smoking at least 1-2 weeks prior to your surgery.
  11. Avoid use of over the counter blood thinning medications such as Advil, Naproxen, Aleve, Motrin/Ibuprofen, aspirin (unless prescribed by your physician) at least 5-7 days prior to your surgery. Tylenol is not a blood thinning medication.
  12. Do not bring small children or more than two people with you, if possible. Our reception area is small and can easily become overcrowded.
  13. NO CELL PHONES, CAMERAS, RECORDERS, or any other media devices are permitted in the treatment rooms and must remain in the waiting room with your escort.
  14. Please arrive 15 minutes early and plan to be in the office about 45 minutes to 2 hours.
  15. Full instructions and prescriptions for post-operative care will be given on the day of surgery. Please note that STRENUOUS ACTIVITY AND EXERTION MUST BE AVOIDED AT LEAST 2 WEEKS AFTER SURGERY.  This includes sports, playing certain instruments, heavy lifting, running, bending over, lifting heavy objects, etc.
  16. If you have a serious illness or are under the care of a physician, tell him/her of your surgical plans. If he/she feels it is indicated, let him/her give you a check-up, advise us of his/her findings and recommendations prior to surgery. If necessary, we will consult your physician.
  17. Additional x-rays may be required and ordered by the doctor prior to your surgery. The purpose is to ensure that you receive appropriate, safe, and expert care.
  18. Do not ignore a head or chest cold when surgery is to be performed. Please call the office if you have any symptoms, as an appointment change may be necessary.
  19. If you are going to have local anesthesia (numbing shot) only, you may eat prior to your appointment and do not need somebody to accompany you to the office if you are over the age of 18.
